"It takes an enormous amount of courage and character as a people to invest in something when there is not a crisis. The natural human inclination is to respond when something is already a mess or already polluted and it's a measure of our character as citizens of a state that we're willing to take some of our resources and invest ahead of time in preventing pollution, protecting resources, preserving some special place and habitat."

"I cannot imagine a better mechanism for doing what the Trust does in terms of actual stewardship, on-the ground projects that make a difference to real people. The reason the trust works so well in this regard is it's very close to the people. We set the priorities; we look at the process in partnership with the citizens of this state. There's not a large organization that stands between the people and what actually happens on the ground."

"We're able to make an investment in those high quality projects that have an opportunity to then leverage that money beyond what the State of Nebraska is investing to private sector funders, local initiative, that's a way that works extremely well in any kind of fund raising process."

"It's a real easy thing for me as a taxpayer to understand because I always think what is the cost of not preserving land, open spaces, prairies our water resources. What is the cost of not having that, not perhaps today or tomorrow but for future generations? I feel that we need to keep faith with future Nebraskans that they can come out on a beautiful summer day and enjoy the same natural resources that we're all enjoying and benefiting from today."
